Client Story: Food For A Normal, Happy Holiday

Jaime shared her story with us this week in Lincoln, Nebraska. She and her four children are clients of the Food Bank of Lincoln.

The holidays for me are the most stressful time of year. The weeks before Christmas or Thanksgiving, I lie in bed, unable to sleep, wondering how I’m going to provide the kind of holiday I want my kids to have.

I sometimes wonder how things ended up like this. I did everything right—got married, earned my bachelors’ degree and was a teacher until I had a debilitating back injury. Now my four kids and I survive on a mere $300 a month in disability payments.

This past Thanksgiving I was able to get our entire Thanksgiving meal from a local food pantry. We received a turkey, cranberries and potatoes—everything I needed to give my kids a normal, happy holiday. This week I plan on going to the food pantry for the items we need to make our Christmas meal.

Without the extra help from pantries there is no way I would be able to make the holidays special for my kids.

Life may be hard sometimes, but my kids mean the world to me—and I know they are going to grow up and live a life better than the one I’m able to give them now. In the meantime, I am so grateful we get to celebrate the holidays together. We may not have much, but we have each other, and that’s what matters the most.
